CPT1 - Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1
CPT1 is a genetic variant commonly found among circumpolar Indigenous populations, including First Nations communities in British Columbia. Children with the CPT1 variant are generally healthy. The variant has been positively selected for over generations because it is beneficial when eating a traditional diet. It can also increase vulnerability to hypoglycemia and infections during fasting or illness.
NOTE: There is work underway to update the 2016 Provincial Clinical Guideline.
