The Indigenous Health Team supports patients and families that self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit).
They advocate for and provide support to Indigenous patients and families who are visiting the hospital.

The Indigenous Health Team
  • The mission of the Indigenous Health Team is to build bridges in health care for Indigenous women, children, families and communities and is guided by the six Coast Salish Teachings gifted to PHSA by Musqueam Knowledge Keeper, Sulksun.’
  • To connect with support, please ask any member of your PICU team (doctors, nurses or social workers) to send a referral to the Indigenous Health Team.

The Indigenous Health Team includes the following:

  • Indigenous Patient Navigators: Work alongside Indigenous patients and families throughout their hospital stay.
    • They also offer traditional medicines and provide access to the sacred space to burn traditional medicines.
    • They can also help with appointment accompaniment, discharge planning, and provide follow-up support after you return home, by phone calls or text.
    • They can assist patients and their families in accessing the sacred space onsite, pictured above.
      • Many families use this space to perform cultural ceremony.
  • Elders and Knowledge Keepers: may be available to speak with you upon request.

You can learn more about Indigenous Health services on their webpage.
