What is the PICU?

The PICU is the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. It is where children with serious health needs receive care.  In the PICU, your child will be monitored and cared for by specially trained physicians, nurses and allied health care professionals. They may also see specialist doctors.

  • The PICU has 28 patient rooms. Every room is private.
  • We provide care for newborns, children and youth up to 17 years old.
Your Role as a Parent

You are the most important person on your child’s healthcare team.

  • We welcome you to speak with your child's healthcare team.
    • You know your child best. Please tell us about changes you notice in your child.
  • Please talk to us about how you can take part in your child's care.
  • You’re not expected to respond to the sounds from any machines or participate in any of your child’s medical care while they’re in the PICU. Your role is to be there for your child and to take care of yourself, too.

Be with your child when you can.

  • The touch of your hand, the sound of your voice, and your presence comfort your child.

Take care of your own health, and your family's health.

  • It is really important to take care of yourself during this stressful time.
  • The PICU is a very difficult place to be - both for a caregiver and for a child. You don’t have to be with your child all the time. Please spend time away from the PICU to refresh yourself when needed.

Visiting Information and Hours
  • Parents and guardians are part of the care team. The PICU is open to you at all times.
  • You decide who visits your child. We recommend two visitors at a time as this helps us maintain a calm, healing space.
  • To protect all children in the PICU, please do not invite visitors who:
    • are sick
    • might be sick, or
    • have been in contact with anyone that is sick.
    • We are especially worried about respiratory infections and chickenpox. These infections are very dangerous for sick children.
