Areas of Focus

Child Health BC is a resource, a forum and a framework. Our areas of focus include:

Planning and priority setting

Province-wide planning of child health services reduces competition for funding and human resources, and means children and youth have access to the right service at the right place and right time.

Building regional capacity for child and youth health services

Improving pediatric services and resources - from promotion and prevention, to acute services and home and community care - in various regions of the province reduces the number of costly and time-consuming journeys for treatment and follow-up visits.

Child Health BC is also developing a plan for regionalized subspecialty services, meaning children will be able to see specialists in or close to their home communities.

Developing standards and guidelines

Child Health BC is leading the development of standards and guidelines for the delivery of child health services, so that families and children can count on receiving a province-wide standard of care wherever they are.

Transferring knowledge

Through best practice workshops, educational and communication initiatives, Child Health BC is supporting hospitals and health care professionals as they treat children and adolescents across the province.

For a listing of current and past workshops see Workshops and Events.

These activities contribute to the development of inter-professional teams, the implementation of practice standards and guidelines, and the identification of gaps in services and resources (local, regional, and provincial).

Child Health BC is also partnering on projects that include development of regional and provincial indicators to measure and evaluate the ability of the system to meet established performance goals and targets.

Implementing and monitoring quality improvement initiatives

When travel for treatment is necessary, improved coordination across the child health care system - from promotion and prevention, to acute services and home and community care - means more efficient and appropriate referrals, and improved transportation and coordination of patient transfers.

Child Health BC and the health authorities are also linking with other child-serving community groups to coordinate initiatives across the province.
